Students from UTS subject 54404 Studio: Narrative Experimentations in Animation returned to the DA in 2023 with incredible projects building on their shared-experience from previous years.
Four groups were tasked: tell an animated story in the Data Arena that uses the theatre's affordances.
They did a spectacular job. Some groups created 3D stereoscopic videos with 16-channel spatial audio effects and interactions via our Motion Capture system.
Each group project found a new way to integrate technologies (such as motion capture) into their storytelling. In particular, the Interstellar Yo-yo group in used motion-capture trackers to transform food props into a series of puzzles. The audience was asked to follow clues and collect the correct assortment of ingredients to complete recipe-based tasks, unlocking further videos in a non-linear sequence.
The Solar Stars group created an immersive outer-space experience using stereoscopic visuals which required the DA's 3D active-shutter glasses. Their surround audio effects set the scene for galactic travel.
House of Roaches transformed the DA into an underground experience, to put the audience into the life of a humble cockroach. We discover the common roach enjoys a life of parties and rock music!
The Triple Whammy group created a unique AR experience. Viewers integrate image props scanned with EyeJack to unlock delightfully animated characters who engage with familiar Sydney landmarks.
The Animation cohorts work for a semester in the DA, as part of their undergraduate degree. The creativity and talent shown is impressive. We're excited to see what immersive & whacky projects will be produced this year.
