Virtual Production Experiments in Exploring Mawson

After a successful shoot on the Exploring Mawson set in March 2022, we worked with UTS MAP Lecturer, Greg Ferris, to create an alternate Virtual Production style camera system, using the Data Arena's Motion Capture setup. As explained in detail on this page, we applied the same process from an earlier experiment with the UTS Animal Logic Academy to the virtual camera inside the Exploring Mawson Unreal Engine project.

One of our MoCap Trackers was attached to a SONY FX6, and the real-world movements of this rig controlled the movements of the virtual camera to simulate realistic object parallax and actor placement in the world. In the videos below, you can see the output from the Sony FX6, as well as an iPhone contextual recording from Thomas.

The results from this very quick test (roughly 30 minutes setup time) are very promising. Lots of adjustments could be made to further improve the mapping between real-world and virtual-world movement, as well as camera adjustments such as field of view, motion blur etc.

Protein Visualiser in UE4

UTS Engineering student Matthew Barrett has recently completed his capstone project on molecular visualisation, and is now rendering PDB (Protein Data Bank) data in the Data Arena using Unreal Engine. Throughout 2021, Matthew has worked on a gallery-style display, with 3 separate protein "stations" positioned around the theatre.

As you enter the Data Arena and scan a QR code on screen, a control interface allow users switch to one of 10 different proteins, rotate the displayed model, and adjust parameters such as atom scale etc.

Images on this page document the work in progress over the past few months, and we'll publish a new page in our Projects section soon, detailing more on Matthew's fantastic work.

Shooting Inside Mawson's Hut

In late November, the Data Arena was host to a production prototype shoot of Mawson's Hut for an upcoming project. Using Unreal Engine 4 and nDisplay, we were able to display a realistic rendering of the hut's interior, including a virtual point light tracked to a prop lamp inside the theatre via our Optitrack Motion Capture system. An outside scene including live-rendering aurora effects and an expansive view of the Antarctic was also used.

More information will be added next year including a full page in our Projects section.
